"The memories are easy to sink into, mesmerizing as siren song." (172) Songs from the Deep is a story of a murder blamed on nature and the two friends who are out to prove that this crime is much more than it looks. Songs from the Deep was nothing like I thought it would be. I was expecting an Ella Enchanted, fanciful and lovely story and I got the adventures of Sherlock Holmes mixed with pirates. This book was written so well and I couldn't have guessed the ending even if I tried. This book kept me on my toes the whole time, trying to find out who killed Conner along with the characters. The only thing that brought this book down to four stars for me is that the two main characters have a couple fights that just get blown way out of proportion and it was just so frustrating to me. Was this an acknowledgements book? (A book that I loved so much that I read the acknowledgements because I didn't want it to end.) No it was not and I don't think that it's a bad thing in this book. Kelly Powell wraps this book up well and I didn't need to keep reading, hoping for more, because I got a wonderful ending that made me content to leave the story behind and know where those character are. I recommend this book for anyone who likes a little fantasy mixed into their mysteries. I would also recommend it to any parent that has a kid going through a detective phase. If your kid liked the 39 clues series when they were growing up they would probably like this book. (I do suggest that the child be over 14 as this deals with tougher topics like murder and kidnapping.)
