"Nothing Ends, Fortuna Sworn" Fortuna Sworn is the first book in the series by the same name. It is an adult book about a girl doing whatever it takes to find her brother. The story seems to take place in modern times but there are faeries, werewolves, vampires, and more. Fortuna is a nightmare, a creature able to see your fears from just the slightest touch and then make you think that that fear is coming alive, right in front of you. Fortuna Sworn was easy to read, and I may just be saying this because my first adult book was pompous as hell but in the end K.J. Sutton makes it easy to read. She doesn't throw in big words unless they are better for description than simpler words. I really appreciate this because then I don't have to read the book with a dictionary by my side and I can instead be immersed in the story. The story does have a very grabbing and exciting start but then it begins to slow down and it isn't til about a third of the book when it gets exciting again. Fortuna Sworn is an adult book with mature themes including adult language and sex scenes, so I recommend it to adults. Even though I write mostly for YA I do recommend this book for anyone who liked the shadowhunters series and would like to see a more mature take on it. Was this an acknowledgements book? (A book that I loved so much that I read the acknowledgements because I didn't want it to end.) No it was not but that is because I have a sequel to read and I am excited to begin reading this. So all in all this is a pretty great book and I recommend it for those old enough, who are interested in fantasy. Firstly when I found out that Fortuna was nightmare and that was explained, I absolutely loved it. I loved it so much that I wish it was specified in the blurb. I think the book may end up in more hands with a blurb that explains such an interesting power and the implications of how it will effect the character.
That being said, Fortuna annoyed me so much. She is just overly aggressive and angry all the time and it really puts her in this grey area between good guy and bad guy. This didn't stop me from reading though. It was interesting to be rooting for her and against her at the same time and I don't know if it is intentional but it kinda puts the reader through the same moral dilemma that she is going through. "Do bad people deserve a second chance or mercy?" Speaking of bad people lets talk about my least favorite character Jassin. God he was so terrible. I never saw any redeeming quality in him that could even make me feel even a little bad when he dies. My one thing though was, why did the gay character have to be the bad guy? I myself am queer, so when I am introduced to a LGBT+ character I easily relate to them and begin to connect to them. I'm sure it was not intended to be a blow to queer people but that is what I asked myself whenever he did something terrible. Why did the bad guy have to be gay? I'm not saying this dismisses his horrible deeds but in the past year I have just gotten really tired of only seeing my sexuality in villains, or having to bury the good characters way too soon, or both. Now with Damon, I think he has been beaten and scared into this relationship and made to think that that is what love should be like. It might take him awhile but I think he will come to the conclusion that he was in a very abusive relationship. I hope that realization comes with falling in love with another boy who treats him so so good. OLIVER. I have to talk about Oliver. I liked him at first but the second that Fortuna woke up and his healing carried over he started to fail his vibe checks. I got so many bad vibes from him and every word I read from him began to seem manipulative and strange. I don't know what will happen with Oliver but he is just sending out so many bad vibes for me and I don't trust him. God I really did like this book though. I like how vicious the faeries were shown but also the little bits of good in them. I loved the trials and that she didn't come out of a single one unharmed. It made her relatable which made you want to root for her, and then when she rejects healing you are against her again. I can't wait to read this full series as it is pushed out. The story could so many different ways and i'm wondering where K.J. Sutton will go with it.
